I would still recommend it and will give the warranty a chance, maybe I just got a bad unit. I also exclusively use hardwood lump charcoal. It’s stored under a gazebo where the FL rain can’t reach it. The display is still out, but the fan seem to work as it should this time around.įull disclosure - I clean the grates after every use with common grill tools and use the Masterbuilder cover since day 1. Today I’m using it again to smoke a rack of ribs - 5th use of the grill. Digital display was completely out this time. It took my almost an hour and a half to cook 4 pork chops. Use #4 - I noticed the fan was working intermittently without reaching my desired temp. The module still worked fine via the app on my phone. The display was barely visible, but I attributed it to the glare since it was a sunny day. But for my third grill session, I noticed the digital display was malfunctioning. First two times of use and it worked flawlessly - the controlled temp on this charcoal/wood grill is what really cemented my love for it. I really wanted to love it, since it is my first charcoal grill in years. Did a little bit of research and, even after seeing some less than good reviews, decided to go with it for it’s features and contemporary design. I bought this grill/smoker for memorial day weekend ‘22. Like I said, I love this thing, there could be some improvements, but it makes some pretty epic bbq. Using fire starters can be a little inconsistent. Having an ignition system would be great for staring the fire. The furthest from the fire is much colder. I feel a little foolish admitting it, but it’s something to get used to. I wonder why my grill isn’t heating up when I see smoke, only to realize the fire in the hopper is just fine…but the plates are still in. Anyway, the way the design is currently it tends to get overlooked. You either open or shut them both at once? A lever/slide would be nice. I forget to remove/add damper plates when required - it would be great to have that in a little better design. The connectivity to the app is a little spotty. It is very nice to not have to plan so far ahead coming from pellets. The gas grill just doesn’t have the flavor.

The pellet grill just couldn’t get there. Being able to really get a good sear is key. All an improvement over my previous pellet grill. I’ve done overnight briskets to burgers, salmon, etc. I’ve had everything from gas to pellets and I’ve always come back to charcoal/real fire. If you're in the market for a smoker, get it!! Don't let that be a deciding factor, it's an amazing appliance. Every time you go into it you'll have to reconnect. It always loses its connection to the grill. The only con is the Masterbuilt phone application. They say you can run it off a cordless drill battery with a modification. The fan is very quiet and pulls very few amps. Switching between the grill/smoker setup and the griddle setup is not difficult. I mixed lump charcoal, cherry wood, and apple wood chips into the hopper and after 8 hours there was still fuel in the hopper. I cooked the pork butt for 8 hours at 250. I can't wait for the next cook! The hopper is really a game-changer. All the food was great! The family loved the food.

I also purchased the Masterbuilt rotisserie kit and made an amazing chicken. Fall-off-the-bone pork butt for pulled pork sandwiches. I made melt-in-your-mouth smash burgers with bacon, sautéed onions, and eggs using the griddle. I cooked steaks to an exact 155 degrees using the provided meat thermometer. I've done some amazing cooks to perfection. I await future products that eliminate these fundamental flaws and perhaps I will return as a customer, Masterbuilt has been good to me over the years and I more than got my money's worth out of this product, I just feel the plastic in high heat is a huge oversight and sets this thing up to fail, using wood chunks to smoke just enhances this flaw imo. Said to myself lets try again, 2 years fast forward I had a grease fire on my 1050, even though I clean it thoroughly I neglected to notice the rail where the smoke enters from the side box accumulates grease that may be unnoticed.Īfter an extreme fire, I already did a work around of the door sensor plastic plungers melting, the gaskets on the fire box both top and bottom showing wear from melting I cannot continue to endorse this to friends. I am a Masterbuilt user since around 2008, loved both of my Masterbuilt Pros amazing little electric smokers.īought a 1050, within the first 2 weeks had a return for a replacement as the electronics failed and an over night brisket cook melted all the plastic as it caught on fire.
